Have you ever wanted to go on a cruise with your sweetheart for a very romantic getaway? Did you know if you don’t tell your travel agent exactly what type of cruise you wanted you could end up on the cruise from hell?

I know a couple who planned their dream cruise trip but unbeknownst to them they ended up on a “Party Cruise.” The people who were on the ship were all young and wanted to party. They were getting drunk and sick on the ship. The wife said it was horrible. One gal took her top off and was running around the ship half naked. She told me she and her husband learn a very valuable lesson on that trip. She said there are different types of cruises to chose from and to make it clear to your travel agent what type of cruise you want to experience.

Here are just a few:

  • Families with Children Cruise
  • Alcohol free Family Cruise
  • Adult Only Cruise
  • Adult Party Cruise
  • Adult Lifestyle Cruise
  • Adventure Cruise
  • People Over 50 Cruise
  • Honeymoon Cruise

And the list just goes on and on, what ever your interest maybe there is probably a cruise available to you and your sweetheart.

Make a list of things you and your partner enjoy doing together and separately. Then list the type of cruises you would like to go on. The more specific you are the less likely you will have the cruise from hell. When you go to talk to your travel agent bring your list! They will then have a clear picture of your dream cruise and so will you.

Don’t forget to pickup the items I wrote about on Sept 29th for a very romantic Halloween and Christmas!

I get asked a lot if I ever use the money I have been saving for our anniversary on other things? The answer is “On occasion I will use it for something else.” I try to keep it for only our anniversary but there are times when we have had to use it for an emergency purchase or something we felt was more important than going away for our romantic rendezvous.

There are times when we need cash right now and the only spot we are willing to pull from is our little stash. When I pull the money out of our savings I will put a big post-it-note on my calendar saying how much money I pulled and will try to put back the amount back as soon as possible but there are times when I can’t.

Last year we chose to spend less on our anniversary by booking a hotel on Priceline for $50 and spent the rest to purchase a new ceiling fan we wanted for the den. Or there was the year I had saved over $700 so we could go to a very expensive inn in Sonoma, CA for our anniversary but chose to do something different with it.

The company I worked for had a company get together at Disneyland for the weekend. We got to go to Disneyland and California Adventure for Larry and me paid by the company. Also they were able to get discounts at all the all the Disneyland hotels. Well Larry and I decided to bring our two youngest grandchildren with us. I talked to Larry and asked him if he would mind if we used our money to stay at the Disneyland’s Grand California Hotel and Spa with the grandkids. He said sure.

We all had a wonderful time with the grandkids and going to both theme parks and we got to stay at the most expensive and elegant hotel Disneyland offers in Anaheim.  Even the grandkids enjoyed staying there. Our grandson at the time was about 15 years old and commented on how nice the hotel and rooms were. You could tell he appreciated we stayed there.  Our grandson is 20 years old now and recently he commented on how special it was to stay at Disneyland’s Grand California Hotel and Spa. He knew we had chosen to spend our anniversary money on them instead.

The moral to the story is, don’t feel bad if you chose to use your money for something different than what it was intended for. If you have to pull out money for an emergency or want to spend it on something else then go ahead and do it. Just make sure you don’t do to every year. Try to put the money back if you can or do like we did and have an enjoyable anniversary but on a smaller budget.

The other day I was talking to our 18 year old granddaughter and decided to ask her what her favorite date night was? Of course she told me she enjoyed going out to a nice restaurant with her boyfriend. I told her we all like doing that but since her and her boyfriend were on a tight budget I know they can’t always got out to dinner. They both have small jobs while going to college.  She agreed and told me something they both enjoy and it doesn’t cost a dime.

She said sometimes they will make lunch at either her house or his. Then they go out to the backyard and lay a blanket on the lawn and enjoy their feast together. I thought it was so cute at how ingenious they were! They had found a way to spend time together without spending any money. They got an opportunity to sit, talk and enjoy the weather with no one else around to bother them.

When there is no money to go out to dinner my suggestion to you is to follow our granddaughter and her boyfriend’s example.  If you can’t afford even a babysitter wait until the kids are taking a nap if it is in the afternoon or if you are planning a picnic dinner wait until the kids are in bed and asleep.

An evening picnic dinner could be very romantic. Lay out a blanket in the backyard, add candles and enjoy your meal together listening to nature’s natural music while enjoying a glass of wine, beer or sparkling cider. You can’t get any more romantic than that.

Let me know what your favorite date night is. Who knows you might see it on my blog!

When traveling, do you feel you are playing the lotto when making reservations for a room? You can’t afford to have a room with a view but it would be nice when you look out your room you had something nice to look out to, not the back end of the parking garage. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to know before you make your reservations what room to chose?

There is a website that will let you know if a room is quite, a corner room, rooms with a great bathroom, preferred rooms, views and floors. They will help you find out the best transportation options to and from your hotel. And of course people like you and me can give their own personal reviews about the hotel and room they stayed in.

The website’s name is tripkick.com. The free site lets you know the best rooms along with the ones to avoid when staying at a particular hotel. It is like having an insider’s knowledge even though you have never stayed there.

SurpriseKiss.com wants you to have a pleasant experience when going on your romantic rendezvous with your sweetheart. Research the hotel you are planning on staying in through tripkick.com, then when you call you will be able to ask for a specific room that meets your expectations.

Did you know today is the first day of autumn? I don’t know about you but I love the feel of autumn, the smells and the crispness in the air. Living in on the central coast in California this is the only season where you notice the change.

Because it is the first day of autumn I thought I would sneak in something thoughtful and romantic to do. Now don’t worry I am not having you at the last minute getting items for this. All you need is a small sheet of paper and a pen to write with.

On a your small paper write:

“Since this is the first day of fall I wanted you to know if I had it all over to do again I would still fall in love with you! Love………”

If you want you could go out side and get a small leaf and glue it on the paper somewhere but if you don’t have the time or can’t find one don’t worry about it.

Just a short sweet note letting your love one know how much you care for them.

Are you saving your $5 a week for your romantic getaway? If you are then you will enjoy reading about this week’s destination. It is known as “America’s First Romantic Destination!” It is also the oldest continuously occupied city. The area has been in existence for nearly 500 years and is along the Atlantic Coast.

Where are we heading too? St Augustine, Florida! The city is full of history and cobblestone streets. It is consider a shopper’s delight with boutiques, unique gift shops, antique stores and museums. And since we are in Florida of course there are golf courses.

There are so many interesting things to do in St Augustine and here are just a few:

Take the Old Town Trolley Tour of St Augustine when you first get there and then set out to visit the attractions that interest you and your sweetheart.

St George Inn is a boutique hotel located in historic Old Town and walking distant to restaurants and attractions. They have 25 rooms and suites with complimentary continental breakfast. Some of the rooms with balconies have views of the Intercoastal Waterways, Castillo de Marcos and the City Gate.

If you are looking for romance with your sweetheart then head to “America’s First Romantic Destination”, St Augustine, Fl, a city that is nearly 500 years old!

Last Friday I wrote about Celeste and Rubin and how they like to go to the drive-in-movies for date night. Well this week I wanted tell you what Celeste’s parents do for date night. They have been married for 22 years and have a ritual that they enjoy doing together.

Celeste’s parents like to go fishing on the pier most Saturday evenings. They usually pack a picnic dinner to take with them and drive to Pismo Beach and walk on the pier. They throw out their rods, lay out a blanket on the bench, sit down and unpack their picnic dinner. They have a nice quite meal while enjoying the view, people watching and getting caught up on each others lives. If they get lucky they bring home dinner for Sunday night and memories of the fun they had on Saturday catching the fish.

It was so cute to see Celeste telling me about her parents and their Saturday night ritual. You could see how much she loves them both and she is very proud that they have been married for so long. When you think about it Celeste’s parents have taught her how to have a good marriage. Celeste and Rubin make it a point to have a date night too. It is different and not always the same thing but they do have their special memories too.

With money being so tight right now for most couples Celeste’s parents are a wonderful example on how to go out on date night and not spend any money. Make it a ritual to have a date night. It doesn’t really matter if you do the same thing every week or something different. It matters that you are taking the time to be together. Be like Celeste’s parents, be an example to your children. You owe it to them and your marriage to have a date night every week.
