couple drinkingOk it is the weekend and you are trying to figure out what to do with your sweetheart. Something that isn’t too expensive but you feel like you have really went out. Well you may want to try what Larry and I have done on occasion.

Make arrangements to have the kids spend the night at friends or family. Get dressed up and go to the nicest hotel in your area and enjoy a drink or two and if you are hungry order hors d’oeuvres. Relax, listen to the music and talk the evening away with your sweetheart.

Larry and I have enjoyed an evening doing this exact thing. You feel like you have gone out of town.

Plan ahead and make sure when you get home your bedroom is set up for a romantic evening together.

• Clean, Crisp Sheets
• Music
• Massage Oils
• Candles

Have a homemade or store bought dessert on hand to enjoy later that evening.

You don’t always have to get out of town to feel like you have.

MovieI wrote this one in 2009 and thought it was worth another read. Hope you like this idea as much as I did and you make plans with your sweetheart to have an enjoyable date with your sweetheart like Karen & Roger do.

This week I was talking to a friend from Colorado and she told me what she and her husband, Roger, do on their dates. It has become a tradition and they both look forward to their quite time together. Their dates are not what you typically think of doing. Most people after they are married assume when you are talking about a date it is in the evening. This is not always the case and because this couple thinks out of the box, they have a longer and more enjoyable date than most couples.

Karen is off every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Roger has a 3 day weekend every other week. The Fridays he is off and the kids are in school they go to see the early bird show at their local theatre. When I say early I am talking the 10:00 AM showing and then they go out to their favorite little restaurant for lunch. They finish the afternoon off by running some errands and getting a cup of coffee before the kids get home.

They get to see all the latest films and there are no crowds. The bonus is it is cheaper because they are going to the early show. She told me they try to be fair by taking turns choosing the movies. One Friday they were in line and there was an older couple in their late sixties in front of them and they were going to see two movies. She heard the older guy say to his wife now I chose one it is your turn to choose the one you want to go to. She thought they were cute. When you look at these two couples they were both very considerate of the other.

She also told me that their friends are always a little envious because they see all the latest movies. Karen reminds them that the only way they could do this is because they go to the early bird shows.

This is such a great idea. You may not have Fridays off like Roger and Karen do but you could trade off on a Saturday or Sunday with another couple to watch the kids. Each couple benefits every other week with some alone time and the kids have fun at the other couples house. The couple that is watching the kids could also host dinner for everyone. You get to see a movie, have lunch out and then go to dinner at the other’s house. This makes for a wonderful relaxing day every other week for each couple. If every other week is too much then try once a month.

Plan on having a date on a budget, it will become a tradition you and your husband will look forward to.

Chinese FoodWith winter rains on the West Coast and snow on the East Coast it is a weekend to stay home. But you still want to feel as if you have done something special with your sweetheart.

You can make it special even if it is at home by making it an evening neither of you will forget for a long time.

• Order Chinese Takeout
• Chill the Wine
• Shower Early
• Turn on the Music
• Slip into something sexy

Slip on something sexy, turn on the music, pour a glass of wine for each of you and enjoy your Chinese takeout right out of the box and feed each other with chopsticks. It will get messy and the best part is when the food falls on to your body you can lick it off each other. Things may get hotter than your food but that is the point. Let the fun begin.

Neither of you will ever look at Chinese food the same way again. Your sweetheart may enjoy it so much it may become a weekly ritual.

lobster sandwichThis week one of our local supermarkets had small frozen lobster on sale for $5 each. We bought 2 and for $10 we plan on making a Lobster Sandwich.

Our plan is to have a romantic picnic dinner overlooking the Avila Pier this weekend.

Here is our recipe:

Lobster Sandwich

Lobster Meat, cooked & chopped
Mayonnaise
Black Pepper
Salt
Lemon Juice (optional)
Romaine Lettuce
Green Onions (optional)
Hot Dog Buns – toasted

Combine chopped Lobster Meat, mayonnaise, pepper, salt & lemon juice. Place the romaine lettuce inside the toasted hot dog bun and add the lobster meat mixture and sprinkle with the chopped green onions.

There are no exact measurements because it really is to your taste buds. It all depends on how many you are making and how much mayo, salt and pepper you like.

Add coleslaw, bring your drink of choice and chocolate dipped strawberries for desert and take your picnic dinner to the beach, lake or overlooking the city lights. You will have the romantic quite time you both so desperately need.

There will be no one bothering you, just the two of you enjoying a romantic picnic together.

Chips & SalsaDid you know Sunday is National Tortilla Chip Day?

So let’s celebrate it by making salsa, guacamole and margaritas to enjoy while watching Netflix or renting a video over the weekend.

Don’t have a salsa recipe you like? My husband, Larry, makes the best salsa in town. When we need to bring something to a potluck dinner everyone ask for Larry to bring his salsa.

Whip up a batch and let me know how you liked it.

Larry’s Sexy Salsa

1 Medium Can Whole Tomatoes
1 Small Can Diced Green Chilies
1 Chopped Onion
Salt, Pepper & Garlic Salt (to your taste)
3 Tablespoons Water

Mix all together and let set to bring all the flavors together

*For hot salsa add a few Jalapeno Chilies (Diced)

Want Guacamole?

Mash up some avocados and add a little bit of salsa you just made. Delicious!

When Larry and I were young and had no money we would make up some salsa, guacamole and margaritas and of course add tortilla chips to scope up all the deliciousness while enjoying TV after our daughter was sound asleep.

It was our little ritual. We would take showers and get into something comfortable then relax together with our inexpensive easy feast we made.

Loving coupleThe weekend is here and what are you and your sweetheart doing this weekend? Not sure? Here is another unique and unusual date with the one you love and you will both feel good about your relationship.

Did you know on Sunday, February 17th, is Random Acts of Kindness Day? Celebrate the whole weekend with your honey by doing little random acts of kindness. Here are some suggestions for you:

• Enjoy going out for coffee with your partner? Anonymously pay for the person behind you.

• Help an elderly person with their bags.

• Going to see a movie over the weekend? Pay for the couple behind you.

• Have extra coupons for dinner. Hand it to a couple walking into the restrurant.

• Help out at the Salvation Army serving food to the homeless. They need help not just on the holidays.

• Know an elderly person who needs help around the house but doesn’t have the money to pay someone? Find out what needs to be done and go over with your sweetheart and complete one task for them.

• Clean out your cupboards and bring the unused items to the Goodwill.

• Know a young couple who could use a little time alone without the kids? Offer to babysit for them for a couple of hours for free.

I am sure you can think of other things to do, just make it a point to do something together that makes you both feel like you are helping to make a better world in your own way. It is good for you and your relationship.

Two playersSince it still gets dark early, I have a date night idea I bet you have never thought of. It is something that is inexpensive and fun.

Purchase a glow-in-the-dark Frisbee and head to your local park at sunset. Enjoy throwing your Frisbee at night. Work up a sweat, play and laugh together. Wager against each other and whoever wins get to choose where your next date will be for the following week.

Have a little fun, laugh a lot and get sweaty. It really doesn’t matter who wins. All that counts is your adrenaline is up and when you get home you are both ready to hop into the shower together. Imagine what that will lead to……Let the real fun begin.

GuitarHave you thought about checking to find out where there is live entertainment for date night recently? There is lots of good local talent right in your own backyard and it usually isn’t very expensive.

Here is a sample of what I found in our local independent newspaper the “Sun” and on the internet:

• Karaoke @ Applebees Restaurant in Santa Maria – Call to find out dates.

• Cadillac Angels singing @ The Santa Maria Inn in Santa Maria– Jan. 11 & 12 from 8 PM to 12:30 Am

• Jon Stephen, Tropical Brazilian Guitar @ The Lions Peak Vineyards Tasting Room in Solvang – This weekend from 2 to 5 PM

• Songwriters Showcase featuring a Bonnie Raitt Tribute on Jan 17 @ SLO Down Pub in Arroyo Grande

• Chumash Casino – Headliners Entertainment – This is usually a little more expensive but planning ahead to see a singer you enjoy is worth saving for and the wait.

• Check your local coffeehouse and see if there is anything going on there in the evening.

• Several wine tasting rooms in Solvang have evening entertainment on the weekends and the only thing it cost you is the fee for wine tasting.

So checkout your local newspapers and the internet and see if you can find something that is being offered in your area. It is usually inexpensive and you get to hear live local entertainment.

What a fun way to spend an evening with your sweetheart.

Couple togetherHappy New Year! Hope you started the New Year off right with my romantic idea for New Year’s Eve. I have another great idea to start 2013 of right and I got it talking to a co-worker last week. She wanted to keep her marriage feeling new and exciting.

Cathy was telling me the only New Year Resolution she and her husband were making this year was once a month they would do something they have never done before with each other. What a great idea! This is something we can all strive to do with our sweetheart the whole year long.

Cathy mentioned she was telling another friend about their New Year Resolution and they suggested they could go sky diving! She said absolutely there was no way she was doing that. She wanted something a little tamer and less expensive.

Here are some suggestions you might want to consider doing with your husband:

• Try a new restaurant in town
• See a foreign film
• Learn to dance the tango
• Take a cooking class
• Go hiking in a new area
• Go to an expensive hotel nearby that you have never been to and have cocktails and appetizers
• Learn to play golf
• Cook something you have never made together

Choose the same weekend every month that you will try something new together and stick to it as much as you can.

Do something you have never done with your sweetheart once a month and you will make your relationship feel new and exciting just like Cathy and her husband will be doing all year long!
